The websites crawl the web looking (through links) for new sites to index. Get some links pointing to your page, and you will be indexed. You can also manually submit your URL to be crawled.
I would suggest submitting to Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Many other search engines and portals draw results from one of those 3 three.

some factors which i believe are essential are:
  *  EzineArticles- Writing an article for EzineArticles will get you indexed not only because there are so many changes happening daily BUT also because EzineArticles will place your initial article on the front page. In other words, Google won't have to reach deep into the website to find your link.
    * RSS directories- Additionally, RSS directories are a great way to get indexed quick because not only are there a lot of changes, but many people will pick up RSS feeds and place them on their site.
    * Social Sites like Digg and Sphinn- Once again, it happens because these types of sites are constantly changing and your site is listed in more than one spot.

Here's the way that i followed:
1. Get backlinks from highly trafficked sites.
2.  Set up an RSS Feed. - Say from feedburner
3. Add it to Blog Directories like technorati...

There are a number of popular web sites which are spidered multiple times per day. Many of these will allow you to create your own profile, blog or page. If you have a link back to your website, you can expect that it will be followed by Google’s spider within a short period of time.

Here are some sites which let you create your own pages with backlinks - there are many others as well:
WordPress.com
Blogger.com
Tumblr.com
Zimbio.com
Squidoo.com

These are some of the important steps:
   1. Make sure that your website is ready (i.e. no broken links, has enough unique contents, etc).
   2. Optimize your website for keywords that are highly related with your website content.
   3. Create a sitemap file for your website. Sitemap file is a formatted file with an XML extension. It contains the URLs for all of your pages in your website. You can use free online or offline tools available to generate your sitemap file.
   4. Upload the sitemap file to your website root directory.
   5. Go to title Google Webmasters Tools and log in using your Google account. Create if you don't have one. It is free.
   6. Type your website full URL in the "Add Site" field on the top of the Google Sitemap page and click OK.
   7. Click the "Add Sitemap" link on the right of your website name.
   8. Choose "General Web Sitemap " on the "Choose Type" option list. Check all the checkboxes provided.
   9. Type your full sitemap URL in the provided field and click "Add Web Sitemap" button.
  10. Wait for about 2 or 3 days. Check Google by typing your website name in the search box with the word site: before the url example site:http://www.yourdomain.com . If it shows up in the result, it means that Google has indexed your website.

Of course social bookmarking your website and then building links on high page rank websites, you can use Firefox SEOquake add-on to see ranking of websites. It does take a bit of time when launching a new website but it's necessary. To get your site stick for a long time on google's first page, read One Week Marketing of Pot Pie girl, it's a crucial piece of course for webmasters.
