Keyword density is important because search engines use this information to categorize a site's theme, and to determine which terms the site is relevant to. The perfect keyword density will help achieve higher search engine positions. Keyword density needs to be balanced correctly (too low and you will not get the optimum benefit, too high and your page might get flagged for “keyword spamming”).

Simple steps to check the density:
Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word-processing software program like Word or Word Perfect.
Go to the ‘Edit’ menu and click ‘Select All’. Now go to the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Word Count’. Write down the total number of words in the page.
Now select the ‘Find’ function on the ‘Edit’ menu. Go to the ‘Replace’ tab and type in the keyword you want to find. ‘Replace’ that word with the same word, so you don’t change the text.
When you complete the replace function, the system will provide a count of the words you replaced. That gives the number of times you have used the keyword in that page.
Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

When I first started working on optimisting my sites I was surprised to find that many failing sites I had purchased had one fatal flaw in their SEO strategy. They have all impimented keyword spamming techniques. this is where you add the same or similar word that is relevant to your site too many times.

If you have a site with a single keyword in your content or in the metatags at too high a level you will find that the search engines give you a bad rating. Simply by correcting this error I have found it is possible to double the organic traffic for an existing site.
